- Weidmuller ZDU 2.5 — tension-clamp connection, rated cross-section 2.5 mm², rated current 24 A, rated voltage 800 V. Good for control circuits, panel internal wiring, and applications where speed and vibration resistance matter.
If you try to fit 4 mm² wire into the ZDU 2.5, you're outside the datasheet. No spreadsheet can fix that.
The Unit Price Trap
It's tempting to think you can just compare unit prices. But identical-looking terminal blocks from different categories are not the same product. The ZDU 2.5 usually costs a little more per piece than a basic screw terminal (think 5-15%, depending on distributor pricing). It also usually needs less labor to wire, no re-torquing step, and a smaller footprint on the DIN rail. The WDU 4 can handle bigger wire and is more forgiving when a crew is not using a calibrated torque screwdriver.
Here's the comparison that matters:
- ZDU 2.5: slightly higher unit price, but shorter termination time and lower lifetime maintenance.
- WDU 4: lower total cost per amp for larger conductors, but slower to terminate and requires torque control on the floor.
In my experience, a crew wiring a 200-terminal control cabinet can finish roughly 15-20% faster with ZDU 2.5 than with WDU 4. On a $4,200 panel wiring contract, that labor saving buys a lot of terminal blocks. The surprise wasn't the price difference. It was how much of the cost was sitting in the labor line item.
Even after choosing the ZDU 2.5 for a signal cabinet in 2024, I second-guessed myself. What if the customer's maintenance staff didn't know how to terminate a tension clamp? If you're in a hurry, do this:
- Pull the wire schedule from the drawings.
- Mark every connection above 2.5 mm². Those cannot use ZDU 2.5.
- Count the remaining terminals.
- Estimate wiring hours using your crew's actual productivity data.
- Add 10% for rework and inspection.
- Compare the two total costs, not the unit prices.
That takes less time than reading the rest of this article. And it will catch the error I almost made in 2023.
When I'd Pick Each One
If the panel has 4 mm² field wiring, pick the Weidmuller WDU 4. If the application is control circuits, sensors, and 2.5 mm² internal wiring, pick the ZDU 2.5. To be fair, the WDU 4 is still a workhorse—especially in plants where the maintenance crew grew up on screw terminals. That said, the ZDU 2.5 is the better default for new control cabinets when the wire size allows it.
When These Rules Don't Apply
If you're in a corrosive or washdown environment, verify the terminal block material and plating; the catalog price difference can be 15%, but the warranty difference is much larger. If your installed base is all WDU screw terminals, it may be cheaper to stay consistent than to train for a new system. If the project is a one-off repair, use whatever is already in the panel. And if a customer spec says screw terminals, don't argue with it. This isn't a technology religious war—it's a cost decision.
One more thing. A multimeter doesn't care about your opinion of tension clamps. It measures the connection. I keep one in my bag because I have seen a cheap connection fail in the field and a slightly more expensive one pass every audit for years. Check your work before the panel ships. That, more than any product choice, is the best shaver of warranty expense I know.
