Weidmuller WDU 4, Aluminum Enclosures, and the DuraForce Pro 2: A Purchasing Admin's 7-Point Ordering Checklist

I'm not an engineer. I'm the office administrator at a controls and panel-building company, about 40 people across three locations. I've handled component purchasing for six years now—roughly $280,000 a year spread across about a dozen vendors. The engineers design the panels; my job is turning their BOM lines into purchase orders that arrive on time and actually fit the rail.

That last part isn't automatic. Weidmuller parts come up constantly in our orders: terminal blocks, aluminum enclosures, DIN-rail power supplies, relays, connectors. And requests don't always arrive as clean part numbers. Sometimes I get language like this:

What is a Weidmuller terminal block? (And what is a WDU 4?)

A terminal block is the modular plastic part that snaps onto a DIN rail inside an enclosure and connects wires together. Think of it as an organized, labelable connection point for conductors. The Weidmuller WDU 4 is a feed-through version of that idea: a screw clamp on each side, with the wire running straight through. The "4" refers to the nominal conductor cross-section—up to 4 mm². It's one of those parts that shows up in panel BOMs over and over again.

What are Weidmuller aluminum enclosures?

An enclosure is simply the box that protects the wiring. If a search for "weidmuller aluminum enclosures" brings up a category page instead of a single product, that's normal. It's a product group, not one item. These are the metal boxes you see in plants, on machines, and near field instruments—not the plastic boxes inside a clean office panel. Which exact box you need is a separate question, and I'll get to that in Check 4.

What is the DuraForce Pro 2?

The DuraForce Pro 2 is a DIN-rail power supply: the module that takes incoming AC power and outputs low-voltage DC for control circuits. In our BOMs it usually appears with extra characters after the name because the family has several output versions. "DuraForce Pro 2" tells you the product family, not the specific unit. That distinction matters around Check 5.

The 7 checks I run before ordering Weidmuller parts

This is the sequence I use. Most steps take under two minutes, and they've saved me more than one awkward phone call from the shop floor.

1. Get the article number before you get the price

True story from my first year: a work order said "need 200 Weidmuller terminal block WDU 4 7.1." I typed the whole string into our supplier portal because I didn't know any better. The order came back wrong. The "7.1" turned out to be a tag from our own cabinet layout—row 7, first position, if I remember right—not part of Weidmuller's product number.

The return cost us around $900, maybe $1,100 once freight and restocking were counted. I don't remember the exact cents. I remember the conversation. Now I never order from a description. I ask for the article number that appears on Weidmuller's product page or datasheet. If a BOM line doesn't have one, it goes back to whoever created it before it reaches purchasing.

2. Confirm which version of the product the project actually needs

Family names like "WDU 4" and "DuraForce Pro 2" are starting points, not endpoints. The same name can cover multiple configurations, and the difference usually isn't visible in a product photo. When the BOM line is vague, I send one short email: "Is this the same part number as the last order, or do you have the updated spec?"

Most of the time the engineer responds with a screenshot from the Weidmuller catalog and the problem disappears. The one time I didn't ask, I ordered 40 identical-looking blocks that were right in every way except the one that mattered for that terminal strip. Checking first is free. Returning is not.

3. Remember that terminal blocks are never the whole order

A row of terminal blocks needs neighbors, and the neighbors are almost always separate line items:

I learned this the hard way on a Friday afternoon. We had 500 WDU 4 blocks on site, but no end clamps, and the panel was supposed to ship Monday. The blocks couldn't be mounted safely without a two-dollar part on the end of the row. The air freight cost more than the clamps did.

4. For aluminum enclosures, size is only the beginning

When someone asks me to source "Weidmuller aluminum enclosures," I now ask four questions before searching:

It's tempting to think an enclosure is just a box. But the difference between a plain undrilled box and one with the right entry plate can mean hours of field labor. Once an enclosure gets drilled on site, it usually can't be returned. I'd rather ask a slightly annoying question up front than process a restocking fee later.

5. On a power supply like the DuraForce Pro 2, lock down the electrical specs

A DIN-rail power supply isn't something you can match by looks. Input voltage, output voltage, output current, and physical width all have to line up with the panel design.

If an engineer writes "DuraForce Pro 2" and nothing else, I ask for the output requirements and the input voltage available at the installation site. That one clarification usually produces a complete article number. It takes the engineer 30 seconds. It saves me from ordering a perfectly good power supply that happens to be the wrong one.

6. Confirm the unit of sale before you type a quantity

This is the check that most new buyers ignore. Some Weidmuller parts are sold individually. Others are sold in packages or bags. If the catalog says "1 bag = 50 pieces" and you type 50 because you need 50 pieces, you may end up with 50 bags.

I did something close to that in 2023 with a box of markers. The line looked fine on the PO. The receiving shelf told a different story. Now I write the unit into our internal PO notes—"qty 1 = pack of 25"—so there's no confusion when the order lands.

7. Inspect against the article number when delivery arrives

Gray terminal blocks and gray power supplies look alike in a cardboard box. The label is the source of truth. When a Weidmuller delivery arrives, I check the article number on the box against the article number on the PO before the parts go to the shop floor.

That check caught a mispick last year. One carton of otherwise identical blocks had a different variant inside. If it had gone straight to an electrician, it would have been installed before anyone noticed. Instead, it took one phone call to fix.

The saying in our shop is simple: five minutes of verification beats five days of correction.

One last thing

This checklist won't make you a Weidmuller product expert, and it doesn't need to. Your job as the buyer isn't to know every terminal block variant from memory. It's to connect the engineer's request to the exact article number—and to check the parts against that number before they disappear into a panel.

You'll still make a purchasing mistake occasionally. I do. But when I do now, it's a small one, and it usually happens before the part ships. That's a much better place to make mistakes than on a customer's production line.
