It looks easy until it isn’t
Let me start with a confession. I once told a junior engineer that an enclosure is “just a box.” Eight years and about $6,000 in wasted budget later, I do not say that anymore. Many RFQs start with the IP rating, and IP66 is a legitimate starting point. But the question everyone asks is, “What IP rating do you need?” The better question is, “What is this enclosure going to live through, and how hot will it get inside?” If someone had asked me that in 2017, I would have saved real money.
Material chemistry is not a footnote
The first expensive lesson came in 2017, my first year handling enclosure specs. We were building a small interface station for a food-processing washdown area. I chose an enclosure with the right dimensions and the right IP rating, but I treated the material column as an afterthought. An enclosure is a starting point, not a finished product

To be fair, I still compare prices. Everyone should. But the line-item price is not the installed cost. The lowest quote is useful only if it survives contact with the field.
The checklist I use now
If I had to compress eight years of mistakes into a short ordering checklist, it would look like this:
- Start with the environment. Write down the chemicals, moisture, UV exposure, temperature range, washdown frequency, and how often the enclosure will be opened. Do this before opening a catalog.
- Verify the exact part offer. Download the datasheet and CAD file for the actual part number. Check whether it is supplied with knockouts or threaded entries, whether the lid is included, and what mounting plate options exist.
- Model the heat. If a power supply or any heat source is going inside a plastic enclosure, calculate the internal temperature rise. Ambient temperature alone is not enough.

- Buy one unit for validation. A single sample costs far less than reworking a full batch.
Plastic enclosures are not glamorous, but they carry a lot of the safety and reliability burden in an industrial system. The good news is that the expensive lessons I learned are preventable. Read the datasheet. Challenge the easy assumptions. Ask the question that feels too basic. It is cheaper to ask before you order than to pay for the answer after delivery.
