The rest of this page is about Weidmuller relays and Weidmuller steel enclosures, and about the $3,200 in mistakes I made before I built a checklist.
I'm a controls engineer at a food and beverage plant, and I've been specifying industrial automation parts for 11 years. In my first year, I made the classic relay/socket error: I ordered 120 Weidmuller relays without sockets. Honestly, I didn't even realize they were separate line items until the boxes arrived. That mistake cost a $650 air-freight charge, a two-week schedule slip, and a conversation with my manager that I still remember.

Before You Start: Does This Checklist Apply?
This checklist works for most control panel builds, retrofits, and maintenance replacements using modular relays in steel cabinets. It is not for Ex-rated areas, high-voltage switchgear, or anyone who needs a full electrical design review. If you're working on machinery with safety-rated controls, get a licensed engineer to check your work. No blog post should replace that.
Also, if you're looking for a product recommendation for a specific machine, ask the machine builder first. Their parts list is likely the only list you need. This is for the gaps in their list.
Step 1: Order Relays and Sockets Together
Trust me on this one. A relay without a socket is a paperweight. And a socket without the relay is a spare part that will sit in a drawer for years.
When you search for Weidmuller relays, the product listing often shows the relay alone. The socket is a separate part number. The mounting rail accessory is another part number. The jumper, if you need to common multiple coil terminals, is another part number. Don't assume the model number includes them.
Checkpoint: before you hit send on a purchase order, verify that every relay line has a matching socket line. Count the sockets. Count the relays. Then count them again.
Step 2: Match Coil Voltage to the Actual Control Circuit
I assumed 24 V DC and 24 V AC coil versions were interchangeable. In 2018, I ordered 50 Weidmuller relays with 24 V AC coils for a panel that ran on 24 V DC. The first one heated up during testing. I looked at the part number, and there it was: 'AC'. Since then, I read the suffix before ordering.
You need the exact coil voltage, the coil supply type, and the tolerance range. A Weidmuller relay with a wide coil tolerance, something like 18-30 V DC, is a better fit in an older plant with noisy power. A narrow coil tolerance is fine if your control supply is clean.
Checkpoint: read the full part number out loud. If you can't identify the coil voltage section, look at the datasheet before you order.
Step 3: Check Contact Ratings and Electrical Life at Your Load
The September 2022 labeling machine failure changed how I read datasheets. I used to think '5 A contacts' meant I could switch a 5 A solenoid valve forever. The labeling machine had a contactor coil that drew maybe 1 A steady-state, but the inrush spike was much higher. The relay was rated for the steady-state current, but not for the switching frequency and inrush. Weidmuller's datasheet listed electrical life curves at different loads; I had skipped that page. Four relays failed within a month.
So here's the rule: look at the electrical life curve for the exact coil and contact load. If the curve is not in the datasheet, ask Weidmuller's technical support for it. If you're switching 20 times per minute, use a relay with a higher rated life or a solid-state output.
Step 4: Don't Forget the Small Accessories
Cross-jumpers, retaining clips, marking tags, separators, and end brackets. These are not afterthoughts. Without them, your neat DIN rail assembly becomes a bundle of loose wires.
In 2019, I used a jumper that was slightly too long for the terminal spacing. It created a dead short between adjacent sensors, took out eight fuses, and gave the whole plant a confusing ten-minute stoppage. The jumper was in the drawer with a hundred other jumpers, and I figured they were all identical.
They are not all identical. Weidmuller makes jumpers for different pitch sizes. Match the jumper to the terminal family and the relay socket, not to the packaging.
Step 5: Choose the Weidmuller Steel Enclosure by Environment, Not by Price
Now, the part that too many people oversimplify: Weidmuller steel enclosures. They're not all the same. A powder-coated carbon steel enclosure is fine inside a dry, climate-controlled building. It is not fine on a coastal loading dock.
When I first started ordering enclosures, I assumed 'steel' meant 'outdoor-proof.' It does not. Salt air finds cut edges and fasteners, and the front panel might be fine while the back edge rusts. If the installation is exposed to sea air, condensation, or chemicals, look at stainless steel versions like Weidmuller's Klippon STB or similar. (Yes, stainless costs more. That's the point.)
Also, if a supplier claims a painted steel enclosure is recyclable, ask for substantiation. Per the FTC Green Guides (16 CFR Part 260, ftc.gov), environmental claims need to be truthful and not misleading. A steel box with a gasket, a paint system, and mixed metals may still be recyclable, but the claim should not assume it's a single-material scrap item. This matters more and more in bids with sustainability requirements.
Step 6: Check IP Rating and Thermal Derating Together
An IP66 enclosure keeps water out. It also keeps heat in. If your relays and power supplies are inside a sealed steel enclosure in a warm plant, the internal temperature may be 15-20 degrees above ambient. That can push a relay coil or a power supply past its rated temperature.
In 2023, I installed a Weidmuller power supply in a steel box and ignored the heat dissipation calculation. The supply shut down every day around 10 a.m. when the plant temperature peaked. We had to add a filtered fan, recalculate the derating, and verify that the enclosure still met its IP rating. That was a much bigger job than choosing the right box the first time.
Checkpoint: add up the power dissipation of every component inside the enclosure. Compare it with the enclosure's heat dissipation curves. If the numbers don't fit, either improve ventilation, reduce the load, or choose a larger steel enclosure.
Step 7: Label Everything Before You Close It Up
This sounds like common sense, but I've opened panels where someone used memory as a labeling system. Weidmuller has marking options for terminals, relays, and wires, and it's worth the extra 30 minutes to print them properly.
Include the part number, the wiring reference, and the date. The person who will thank you is the next technician, which might be you after a long shutdown.
Common Mistakes I Still See (And Have Made)
- Ordering relays but no sockets. I did this in 2017. Don't do it.
- Using a jumper from the wrong terminal family. I did this in 2019.
- Assuming a powder-coated steel enclosure is marine-rated. It is not.
- Skipping the electrical life curve. This cost me a labeling machine failure in September 2022.
- Closing a steel enclosure without calculating heat rise. This cost me a power supply shutdown in 2023.
There's no drama in these mistakes. They're boring, predictable, and avoidable with a list.
When This Checklist Is Not Enough
If your panel is in a hazardous area, if the circuit is part of a safety function, or if you're not comfortable with electrical ratings, stop. Call Weidmuller or a qualified electrical engineer. This checklist is a starting point, not a certification.
